General Relaxation and Sleep Aid
One of the most obvious benefits of Cannabis oil is to relieve anxiety and stress. Many cannabinoids release pleasure hormones and have a calming effect on the body and mind, the most famous of which is THC. THC is the chemical that creates the euphoric “high” commonly associated with marijuana, as well as the drowsiness and body relaxation that can lead to deep sleep.
Cannabis oil works well as an analgesic, perhaps better than cannabis that is inhaled. Although the effect is delayed (between 20 and 40 minutes) the pain-relieving effects last for at least 2 hours and possibly as long as 4 hours. RSO is a popular oral option for people suffering from fibromyalgia, lupus, cancer, HIV/AIDS and the effects of chemotherapy.
Most states with laws allowing medical marijuana use list glaucoma as a qualifying condition. Cannabis has been proven to reduce intraocular pressure associated with glaucoma. Taking it in its oil form makes it easier to dose, though requires some planning. Cannabis oil has to be taken every 3-4 hours to keep the pressure low, and the effects are delayed as compared to smoking.
Increased Appetite and Anti Nausea
We all know that the munchies are a thing. For this reason, cannabis oil has potential to assist in the treatment of eating disorders. Cannabis oil is used in conjunction with therapy and physical monitoring. Cannabis oil can be used to encourage hunger as well as relieve the anxiety that is often the root cause of these disorders. Cannabis is also well studied for its effectiveness in reducing nausea which can assist those with eating disorders in avoiding a feeding tube when they are unable to eat solid foods.
Both effects also make cannabis oil useful for those undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
More Benefits Currently Being Studied
Ok, let me preface by saying that there needs to be A LOT more research before anything is conclusive, but cannabis oil seems to have potential in the treatment of some cancers. Remember Rick Simpson? He claims to have cured his cancer simply using his RSO and eating a vegan diet. He also claims to have offered his “cure” to thousands of people suffering from the disease. Not enough study has been done to corroborate his claim, and many don’t take it seriously.
In 2009 researchers in Spain discovered that THC induced the death of brain cancer cells in mice. This experiment led to years of refinement and further research. Today a groundbreaking clinical trial based on those findings is underway in England. Human patients with aggressive brain tumors are being treated with a combination of THC-CBD oral spray with temozolomide (a conventional drug with some success in shrinking glioblastoma multiforme.) As of this writing, patients receiving the oral spray are living longer and experiencing fewer ill effects than those who are receiving a placebo instead.
Cannabis oil also shows promise in treatment for ALS and MS. Again, much research needs to be done and the scientific process is a slow one. But the prognosis is promising.
When the same process used to make cannabis oil is applied to hemp, the result is sometimes called “CBD oil” or “hemp oil.” CBD oil has many medical applications without the psychotropic “high” associated with ingesting marijuana. Though hemp oil may not be as effective as RSO in pain or cramping relief, proven effects of CBD include:
• Better sleep
• Reduced stress
• Decreased inflammation
• Minor aches and pain relief
• Anti convulsion/anti-seizure
The health benefits of cannabis oil are still being studied, and more are being discovered daily. Other potential benefits of cannabis oil that are just waiting for more research:
• Reducing cigarette cravings
• Reducing opioid withdrawals
• As an antipsychotic
• To shrink or eliminate cancerous tumors
• Aid in treatment of PTSD, Panic Disorder, OCD and Social Anxiety Disorder
• Type 1 diabetes
• Alzheimer’s Disease
Of course, there’s at least one more benefit of cannabis oil – fun! Recreational customers can enjoy RSO as a carefully measured edible. As with any edible, be very cautious about your dosage to avoid anxiety or paranoia. To try some for yourself, come by Ruckus Recreational in Seattle between 8 AM and 11:45 PM any day of the week. Our budtenders will talk you through how much RSO to take and how often for best effects.
